- At the February 13 Regular Meeting, Whitecourt Town Council
was presented with information regarding the environmental testing
and abatement program recently
completed at the Whitecourt Twin Arenas and RCMP Century Swimming
Pool.
Mr. Hall, a representative from R.H. Services Inc. that conducted
the environmental testing, stated that the arena is absolutely
safe for public use. He reported that it is typical for
public and industrial buildings to undergo hazardous material
testing, and that the test results from the arena and pool were
consistent and ordinary compared to similar buildings. Council
accepted Mr. Halls report as information.
Town Council received a proposal from Mr. George Cuff, and has
contracted his services to perform a Corporate Review. George
Cuff provides consulting services in the areas of council governance,
organization reviews, and staff and elected official training.
The Development Services Committee has produced a number of brochures
detailing information on various development issues. The brochures,
which provide information on topics such as residential driveway
development, site coverage, certificates of conformance and several
others, are available at the Town Administration Office, and can
be found on the Towns website and at various locations throughout
the community in the near future.
February 9, 2006
- Woodlands County Council and Whitecourt Town Council held a
Special Meeting on February 9 to hear information regarding the
Whitecourt Leisure Campus. Representatives from Barr Ryder Architects
and Planners and Stuart Olsen Construction discussed and explained
recent increases in cost calculations for the
approved project. It was reported that a number of factors, including
inflation, detailed design engineering and Albertas economic
state, have contributed to the increase in cost for the project.
In addition, recent findings from a detailed review of the pool
showed potential cost increases to mechanical and electrical systems.
The significant change in the cost for the Whitecourt
Leisure Campus has necessitated a review of project options. Stuart
Olsen Construction, the construction manager for the project,
has been directed by both Councils to compile detailed cost figures
for various options. Barr Ryder Architects and Planners will be
producing
conceptual plans to correspond to the various options presented
by Stuart Olsen.
The updated costs and plans are expected to be available
for Woodlands County and Town Councils review next week.
Woodlands County and the Town of Whitecourt will be reviewing
all information and deciding the direction of the project as soon
as possible in order to keep costs to the community from rising
further. The Town of Whitecourt will continue to keep the community
informed on the progress and direction of the project.
